Every parent will face adversity. Some will feel overwhelming, even terrifying. The adversity may involve a terminal illness, a dramatic life-changing event, a job loss or a divorce. And when life turns tough, we have a choice about how we will respond. Will the hardship be our undoing or will it makes us stronger? Thinking about how we will respond is critical for our children because as we respond, they watch us. And more importantly, their security or fear will revolve around how we respond- what we say and what we express. Even in the midst of pain, we must lead our children and help them by allowing the difficulty to strengthen us, not make us weaker. This is the story of Cheryl Wilkinson, a mother of three children, who lived with breast cancer and battled it bravely. It is the story of hundreds of thousands of parents who have confronted life- threatening illness and fought hard. It is a story of strength, love and the blessings that came to her whole family. Dr. Meg shares her Points To Ponder and answers an email from a single mother about her son’s father. Send questions to askmeg@megmeekermd.com

Dr. Meg talks with filmmaker David A.R. White (producer of the blockbuster movie God’s Not Dead) about his new book Between Heaven And Hollywood. Other features include Dr. Meg’s Points To Ponder and she answers an email question about a little boy who won’t listen to his parents.

0:27 – WELCOME

Young children, middle school kids, teens and even adults dream about who they will become, what they can achieve or what difference they can make in the world. Good parents want to know their children well enough to hear about those dreams and help children either follow them or shift their passions toward more realistic goals. In many ways, helping our children pursue their dreams, helps parents who never reached their own. It is important to be able to handle our child’s intentions in an instructive, supportive and realistic way. But doing this isn’t easy. We live with healthy skepticism and sometimes feel threatened by the nature of our children’s dreams. We will hear a story about one man’s dreams and how pursuing them challenged everything his parent’s taught him. That man is the featured guest in this episode, filmmaker and author David A.R. White. His story illuminates how a child’s dreams can seemingly oppose the core values that parents teach their children. Most importantly, it shows how parents can respond in ways that keep their kids on track in the most important areas of life.

Many parents worry about their child’s health, a specific illness, or simply the “what-if’s” when it comes to parenting. “What if my child turns away from me, what if my child flunks out of school or what if my child gets a terminal illness.” Fear is a regular part of parenting. But parenting out of fear robs parents- and their children- of the joy that they were meant to experience in life. We can overcome fear and we can get worry under control because the truth is, we have a lot less control over our children’s lives than we think we do. We will hear the extraordinary story of one mother who lived with the pain of her young daughter’s chronic illness. Her daughter lived in and out of hospitals and experienced abdominal pain daily. We will hear how this mother coped with her daughter’s life-threatening illness and then the miraculous event that changed them both. This is the story of Christy Beam. Her story became a popular movie with Jennifer Gardner called Miracles for Heaven.
